The new Quảng Ngãi province, explained: Kon Tum and Quảng Ngãi since 1 July 2025
On 1 July 2025, Vietnam reorganised its provinces. Kon Tum, in the northern Central Highlands, and Quảng Ngãi, on the south-central coast, became a single province that keeps the name Quảng Ngãi.
Here is the new province at a glance.
Key figures
| Total area | 14,832.55 km² |
| Population | 2,161,755 |
| Commune-level units | 96: 86 communes, 9 wards and 1 special zone |
| Legal basis | National Assembly Resolution 202/2025/QH15 |
Two tiers of local government
The reform removed the district level. Local government now has two tiers: the province and the commune (communes, wards and special zones). Many people’s administrative address has changed as a result, even though they have not moved.
Lý Sơn, the volcanic island off the coast, became a special zone (đặc khu).
From the highlands to the sea
The merged province runs from the border highlands around Ngọc Hồi and the pine forests of Măng Đen, through the Đăk Bla river valley, down to the plains of the Trà Khúc river and the coast at Sa Huỳnh and Lý Sơn. It is one of the most varied landscapes in Vietnam inside a single province.
Why this matters for QNG AI
Questions such as “which new commune is my old address in?” or “where do I go for this paperwork now?” are exactly the everyday questions a local assistant should answer well, with sources. Getting them right is one of the reasons we are building QNG AI.
